Patrick Joseph O’Shea, 85, of Blaine, Kansas, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at his home. He was a life-long resident of the community.
Pat was born March 26, 1927, in rural Blaine, Kansas, the son of John and Lenora Farrell O’Shea. He attended local schools and graduated from Blaine High School in 1945. He then briefly attended Kansas University. He served as a clerk in the United States Army during WWII while stationed in Italy.
Pat spent his entire life as a farmer and stockman on the family farm north of Blaine. He also worked construction for a few years and helped build the original Onaga Community Hospital. Pat was a steward of the land and proud of his Irish heritage. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 0181 in Frankfort for over 50 years, and a board member of the Wheaton Volunteer Rural Fire Department. He was an active member of St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church and a honorary life-member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 2278. Pat was known for his love of all sports. He loved to attend Rock Creek games as well as other local sporting activities, especially when his grandchildren were participants. Above all, Pat was an avid KU fan.
Pat married Joetta “Dottie” Umscheid on June 21, 1951, in Flush. She survives at their home.
He is also survived by his son, Stephen (Kellie) O’Shea, Blaine; his daughters, Patricia (Steven) Campbell, Westmoreland, Debra O’Shea, Westmoreland, Lisa (Mike) McAdams, Manhattan, Vicky (Russell) Geyer, Flush, and Colleen (Dan) Janatello, Shawnee; son-in-law, Greg Parsons, Auburn; brothers, Raymond O’Shea, Highland Park, Colorado and Robert O’Shea, Oskaloosa; sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie Parsons in June of 2011 and three brothers, Norbert, Gilbert and John O’Shea.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Blaine. Father Pat Sullivan will be the Celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, at the church, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A rosary prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church or American Legion Post 1081, and those may be sent in care of Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton.
