Norman Eugene Spain, 82, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Wamego and Manhattan, died Sunday, June 25, 2017, at his home. After several years of retirement, Norman moved from the Manhattan area to Texas to be closer to family.
Norman was born October 1, 1934, in Manhattan, the son of Bertie and Inez Edwards Spain. He attended local schools and graduated in 1953 from St. George High School.
Norman married Patty L. Mayer on May 1, 1955, in Zeandale. To this union four children were born. After their marriage, they moved to Morris, Illinois, where Norman accepted Christ as his personal Savior on Palm Sunday 1957. Norman worked for Caterpillar Company and the Morris Paper Mill. Norman moved back to Kansas in 1958 and worked for the Manhattan Meat Company. He served four years in the Kansas National Guard, eight years for the Wamego Police Department, and sixteen years as a State Trooper for the Kansas Highway Patrol in the Wichita area.
Norman was a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Manhattan, and after moving to San Antonio, he was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. In 2015 Norman and Patty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Norman is survived by his wife, Pat; children, Terry Schmidt (Dan), Sacramento, California, Bert Spain (Tami), Wichita, Kansas, Peggy Scheideman (Sam), San Antonio, Texas, and Mary Trudell (Roy), of Taft, Texas; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Larry Spain (Judi), Springfield, Missouri. Norman was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, William “Bill”, Opel Collier, Sylvia Nelson, Betty Sharp, and June Spain; and a twin grandson Christopher Spain.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Burial with honors will follow in Louisville Cemetery. Norman’s body will lie-in-state on Wednesday, beginning at 2:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.campanellafuneral.com.
