Lola May Ringel, 93, of Alma, Kansas, died Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was a life-long resident of the community.
Lola was born on February 28,1925 in rural Paxico, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Ella Martens Mathies. She attended District 66 grade school and graduated in 1943 from Paxico High School.
Lola married Leo Arthur Ringel on August 27,1947 in McFarland, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2006.
Lola was a homemaker and farm wife. She also worked for over twenty two years and retired from Flint Hills Foods where she processed and packaged meat. She had also worked as a clerk at the drug store in Alma and as a waitress and cook for the Harvey House Cafe and the Alma Hotel restaurant. Lola loved to garden and especially loved her flowers. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was known for her delicious pies. She was a quilter and seamstress. She made quilts at the church and at the Wabaunsee County Museum. She also made clothes for her family. Lola was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland and then St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. She also was a member of the Ladies Community Club, District 3 Community Card Club, and the McFarland Senior Center.
Lola is survived by her daughters; Ruth Van Houten, Jane Barnes (Buddy), both of Alma, and Paula Fairchild (Jim), Abilene; her ten grandchildren, Shanna Sterling (Greg), Angela Cathcart, Jim Barnes (Vicky), Bill Barnes (Emily), Lorrie Jackson (Larry), Kiana Horton (David), Michael Fairchild, Kimberly Pew (Shawn), Jonathan Fairchild, Derek Fairchild; her twenty three great-grandchildren, Miranda (BJ), Mackenzie, Afton, Asher, Ezra, Taylor, Tristin, Kadence, Autumn, Brendan, Abby, Lexi, Kyleigh, Keegan, Dylan, Kyle, Joshua, Savannah, Natalie, Kenryk, Traven, Carson, Jaden; her sisters, Mary Ashworth, Wamego, Nyla Mathies, Manhattan, and Belle Herbic, Alma. Lola was also preceded in death by her siblings, Leon Mathies, Agnes Ringel, Fred Mathies, Mavis Erickson, Donald Mathies, Doris Mathies, and Nelle Meseke and her grandson-in-law, Shawn Cathcart.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 18, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Reverend Robert Grimm will be officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Lola will lie-in-state on Friday, beginning at 3:00 pm. at Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm. until 8:00 pm. They suggest memorial contributions to St. John Lutheran Church or St. John Lutheran School, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home.
