Janet Kay Hafenstine, 73, of Alma, Kansas, died Saturday, January 5, 2019, at her home. She was a life-long resident of the community.
Janet was born on December 8, 1945, in Wamego, Kansas, the daughter of Osborne and Evelyn Moege Berroth. She attended local schools and graduated from Alma High School.
Janet worked as a customer service representative for twenty-five years at Kansas Power and Light (Westar) in Manhattan. She was also co-owner and bookkeeper of Hafenstine Construction LLC. After her retirement she enjoyed baby-sitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Janet was an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma. She served for a time as its bookkeeper and also as a member of the Church Council and Altar Society. Janet volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Janet was a great cook, enjoyed Bunco, and taking trips to the casino. Janet loved her family and the time she could spend with them, especially her grandchildren. She loved gatherings at the family cabin on Lake Wabaunsee.
Janet married Donald Paul Hafenstine on April 28, 1962, in Alma. He survives at their home.
Janet is also survived by her son, Brian Hafenstine (Jamie), Alma; her grandchildren, Melissa Buescher, Topeka, Tyler Wegele, McFarland, Heather Noriega, Alma, Alexis Hafenstine, Alma and Kara Hafenstine, Alma; her great-grandchildren, Peyton, Kimber, Brody, Bennett and Adriana; and her siblings, Ruth Wille (Wayne), Alma, James Berroth, Alma, and Bruce Berroth (Mary), Alma; and her brother-in-law, Byron Jodlowski, Atlanta, Illinois and sister-in-law, Teresa Berroth, Alma. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Cindy Shade, her son-in-law, Joe Shade, her siblings, Alice Jodlowski and Scott Berroth.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma. Father Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow at Alma City Cemetery. Janet will lie-in-state on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 PM at the Holy Family Parish Hall, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Rosary prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. They suggest memorial contributions to Wabaunsee County Relay for Life, Holy Family Cemetery Fund, or PWRL - Alma Branch, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma.
