Florence “Irene” Hodges, 95, of St. George, Kansas, died Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. She was a lifelong resident of the area.
Irene was born on December 14, 1921, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Delbert and Florence Hunter Ward. She attended local schools and graduated in 1939 from Manhattan High School.
Irene was a farmer’s wife and an active participant of the family farm operation. In her earlier years, she loved to dance and roller skate. She enjoyed holding babies, playing cards, working puzzles, and raising cane, but Irene was best known for her welcoming spirit and always having a meal on the table for anyone who came walking through the door.
Irene married Loran Dale Hodges on December 29, 1940, in Abilene, Kansas. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2013.
Irene is survived by her sons; Russell “Butch” Hodges, Dennis Hodges (Sherill), Willard Hodges (Jeanette), Gary “Doc” Hodges, and Edwin “Ed” Hodges (Cheri), all of St. George; her siblings, Ida Zarger, Kansas City, Marge Cooley, Lecompton, Alvin Ward, Manhattan; twenty five grandchildren, thirty nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four grandchildren, Tommy, Randy, Dustin, Russell Miles, three great grandchildren and siblings, Bob Ward, Delbert Ward and John Ward.
A graveside inurnment service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 1, 2017, at St. George Cemetery, St. George, Kansas. Pastor Jim Lowry will be officiating. The family will greet friends on Monday, November 27, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Irene will lie-in-state on Monday beginning at 3:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to Campanella-Evans Mortuary to help with funeral expenses.
