Elvera Irene Gehrt, 92 of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, May 5, 2017, at Lexington Park Assisted Living in Topeka. She was a life-time resident of the Alma community.
Elvera was born January 31, 1925, in the Kuenzli Creek community in rural Wabaunsee County; the only daughter of William and Gertrude Anderson Mogge. She attended local schools and graduated from Alma High School in 1942.
Elvera was an office clerk at Medical Associates of Manhattan until she retired in 1985. She was instrumental in the process of getting Medicare acceptance to help their patients. She also worked at First National bank in Topeka just after high school and she worked as a bookkeeper at a hospital and she worked as a dental assistant.
Elvera loved her K-State Wildcats she enjoyed watching them play all sports. She enjoyed tending her garden and doing anything that kept her outdoors including hunting and fishing. She liked to travel with her husband, Al; they went to Colorado annually for trout fishing. She was very active in the Peace United Church of Christ; she liked to bake cookies for Cookie Sunday and helping with church dinners. She liked going to auctions and antique stores. She also enjoyed crafts and quilting. She was also very involved with the American Legion. She was on a bowling league for Allen Grocery in Ogden.
Elvera married Albert “Al” Gehrt on May 20, 1945, in McFarland. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1993.
Elvera is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers and their spouses, Lawrence (Olga) Mogge, Archie (Betty) Mogge and Donald (Trudy) Mogge; and her companion, Bud Simon.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ in Alma. Reverend John Austin will be officiating. Interment will be held at McFarland City Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma. Mrs. Gehrt will lie-in-state beginning at 3:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Peace United Church of Christ or Great Lakes Caring Hospice and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home.
