Donald Lee Mathies, 79, of Alma, Kansas, died Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at his home. He was a life-long member of the area.
Don was born September 22, 1938, in rural Paxico, Kansas, the son of Fred M. and Ella Marten Mathies. He attended grade school at District #66 and graduated from Paxico High School. Don then served in the United States Army from 1961 through 1963.
Don worked his entire adult life as a carpenter. He did general carpentry work including numerous homes, hay sheds and other remodeling projects. He also did mowing and snow removal for area businesses and residences. He was a member of the Wabaunsee Historical Society, Alma Foundation, Spring Creek Community Club, American Legion, Post 32, Alma Chamber of Commerce, Flint Hills Tractor Club, Trinity Lutheran Church, and Trinity Lutheran Laymen’s League. He enjoyed doing volunteer work especially at the Alma Library, Historical Society, and the Railroad Park.
Don was a musician and played the guitar, harmonica and sang for many local jam sessions. He was a woodworker and did furniture repair, made craft projects, and toys. Don loved to hunt and fish.
Don married Iris Joyce Meseke Blue on August 16, 1985. She survives at their home.
Don is also survived by his children; Gordon Blue (Penny), Ellsworth, Kansas, Karen Burgh (Bob), Alpharetta, Georgia; his grandchildren, Brandon Blue (Saige), Smith Center, James Blue (Danielle), Council Grove, and David Burgh, Sam Burgh, and Ben Burgh, all of Alpharetta; his great-grandchildren, Ayden, Bridgette, and Benjamin; his siblings, Lola Ringel, Alma, Mary Ashworth, Wamego, Nyla Mathies, Manhattan, Fred Mathies, Jr. (Katie), Maple Hill, and Ada Belle Herbic, Alma, and a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, his twin, Doris Mathies, Ida Nelle Meseke, Agnes Ringel, Mavis Erikson, and Leon Mathies.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland. Reverends Chris Vossler and Robert Grimm will be officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will greet friends at a luncheon at the church. They suggest memorial contributions to The Wabaunsee County Historical Society or Trinity Lutheran Church, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma.
