Althea Gertrude Sender, 91, of Onaga, Kansas, formerly of Wamego, Kansas, died Monday, May 1, 2017, at the Onaga Community Hospital. She was a longtime resident of the area.
Althea was born on August 26, 1925, in St. James, Minnesota, the daughter of Raymond and Mary Lorenz Zea. She attended local schools and graduated from High School in Butterfield, Minnesota, in 1943.
Althea married Harry Ray Sender on March 17, 1944, in Manhattan, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1990.
Althea was a certified Nurse’s Aide and also a Certified Medication Aide and worked for twenty-seven and a half years at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego. She also worked at Haven of Rest in Wamego and St. Mary’s Hospital in Manhattan. Prior to living in Kansas, Althea was the union steward for Butterfield Foods.
She was a member of the Wamego Senior Center and the Onaga Senior Center. She also served as president and treasurer of the Resident Advisory Council at Red Bud in Onaga. Althea loved to watch Royals and Twins baseball games, read, especially mysteries, work jig saw puzzles, puzzle books and play Bingo. She enjoyed doing embroidery and needle work. She was a people person she loved meeting new people. She loved going to the annual Threshing Bee in Butterfield, Minnesota and spending time with her family and friends.
Althea is survived by her children: Erwin Ray Sender (Rosanne), Louisville, Mary Rutherford, Louisville, Ellan Spivey, Alma, Danny Sender (Maria) Louisville, Robert Sender, Leonardville, Penny Bahret (Ernie) LeCompton, Harry John Sender (Donna), Wamego, and Peggy McClain (Dan), Onaga; twelve grandchildren; Leslie Sender, Linda Sibert, Brady Spivey, Tasha Bailey, Michael Sender, Mandy Isizarry, Maggie Quigley, Blair Bahret, Dylan Bahret, Melissa Talley, Austin McClain, and Jennifer Sender; twenty-one great- grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Charles Zea (Cathy), Madelia Minnesota, Harry Zea (Deanne), Hanska, Minnesota, David Zea (Linda), Rochester, Minnesota, Kathleen Shuck (Bob), Catlett, Virginia and Florence Allen, Rochester, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Eldora Zea, nieces, nephews and many friends. Althea was preceded in death by her parents, three children, Pauline, Leon Harry, and Raymond, and siblings, Darrel Zea, Ethel Gudbauer, Donald Zea, and Leon Zea.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2017, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Reverend Dr. Tony Mattia will be officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan. Althea’s body will lie-in-state, beginning at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to Red Bud Assisted Living and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.
